MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I just read The Mansion. My favorite part is the description of what matters in heaven. It is a short list of many things that I imagine are important in heaven. I can't, however, imagine a person like the main character in real life. How can someone give and still never develop genuine feelings for those he gives to? I also wonder how the son figured out the paradox of his father's personality. I bet that could make a good story.

The Mansion & A Christmas Carol WINS!

Nadine will lead our December's discussion on The Mansion. Read it on-line or wait for our free printed copy. She'll relate it to A Christmas Carol, which we hope you'll read free on-line as well:

1. The Mansion by Henry Van Dyke: A short story with a message about serving others for the love of doing it.
2. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: Scrooge's heart is softened after being visited by Christmas past, present, and future.

President Monson quotes from both stories frequently. He tells us in his first talk as president to make our homes a library of learning. I think reading his favorite Christmas stories is a great way to follow the Prophet in more ways than one. :)

First Book Club Meeting

Thanks for everyone who came! We had a nice intimate group of 7 and a little baby who wouldn't sleep. Once everyone left he was as happy as ever and wanted to stay up and play. A lot of people read the book or started it and couldn't come for one reason or another. We're sorry we missed you. Feel free to blog your thoughts!

Decisions made at book club:

1. We'll read a bunch of Christmas & other shorts (please blog some you like).

2. We're making the blog public w/o names.
